I have been Acne-free for a while now and it feels so good to say that. I still have the random breakouts here and there, mostly to do with hormones or diet/lifestyle changes. But nothing as intense as what I dealt with through my teens and early 20’s. This has taken me a long time, a lot of trial and error to realise what causes my stubborn pimple and blackheads. I found it doesn't matter how many products you use or how expensive they are, if you are not strict with some rules, it wouldn't make a lot of difference.
I have finally reached a point where I know what triggers my acne and how best to deal with it. Thanks to my tailored skincare routine, I rarely have to deal with acne.
In future posts, I will be sharing my morning skincare routine, skincare routine "post heavy makeup", Weekly Skin care routine and Pamper Session as well as tips on how to get clearer skin so stay tuned.
As for now, here’s what I do every night (okay almost every night) to care for my skin. And I'll have you know that every night I imagine little elfs working at night to correct my face from all the products and it feels good!
tip: click on the pink texts, they are links to the products I am using ;)
STEP 1: Oil Based Cleanser
This step is useful to remove the makeup on my face as it melts out even the most water-proof makeup. It also removes sebum, spf, pollution and other oil-based impurities. I start off with applying the Banila Co clean it zero cleansing balm on my dry skin, gently rubbing it all over my face and lips-and my neck too, if I applied makeup on it. I then rinse it off with lukewarm water until all the milkiness is gone.
STEP 2: Water-based cleanser
This step completes the double cleanse method of washing the face. This method helps to remove all the water-based impurities such as sweat and dirt. It also takes out everything else that’s left over from the first step. The product from this step has a soap-like consistency. I pump the Cosrx Low PH Good morning gel cleanser on my palm to form a lather and rub it in a circular motion all over my wet face and neck, then I rinse it off with warm water.
I love this product for it’s low PH level and how it doesn’t give me this stripping and tight feeling after use.
STEP 3: Exfoliator
This step helps to clean out my pores and to take off dead skin cells to give a softer and brighter looking skin. I do this every other day or 3 times a week and I find that it helps to clean my face so that the other products I use work better. I use the Neogen Cica Pad exfoliator which comes in pre-soaked abrasive pads, making application very easy. The abrasive pads gently exfoliates my skin without harming my skin barrier.
This step is my favourite, this product helps to repair the skin barrier whilst also replenishing the skin from what it lost during the cleansing process and also balancing the PH level on the skin. It also aids your skin to absorb the treatment and moisturizing products better. I use the iUnik tea tree toner which is an exfoliating toner on days when I don’t exfoliate and my hydrating toner which is the Laneige cream skin on days when I exfoliate. This is so I don’t irritate my skin by over-exfoliating. Also on days when I exfoliate, I apply my toner using my fingers and on days I exfoliate, I apply using cotton pads- this helps to remove residue left over from cleansing.
The tea tree toner contains 67% Tea Tree leaf water and 19.5% Centella Asiatica leaf water which are both ingredients that treat and prevent acne. It also contains Niacinamide, a form of Vitamin B3, which shrinks pores and repairs fine lines and uneven skin tone. It also contains Adenosine which has anti-aging properties.
I will talk more about the Laneige toner in my Morning skincare routine.
STEP 5: Essence
Think of this as the magic potion for your skin. It usually has a concentration of products whose key responsibilities are hydration and has ingredients to deal with brightening and anti-aging properties. My holy grail essence is the Missha Time revolution essence but I am currently using the Cosrx Advanced Snail Mucin and actually loving it. It repairs the skin from redness, hyper-pigmentation and dry patches while also replenishing it of the vital nutrients and promotes elasticity. I usually pump it once on my palms, rub it and apply all over my face and neck.
For me this step involves using a serum to treat specific skin areas and problems. My biggest issue right now is to prevent acne but when I had hyper-pigmentation and acne scars, this step and the essence really worked well in treating it. If you have fine lines and lack of elasticity in your face, this step will help with that. I use the Missha advanced night repair serum because of its formula which contains ingredients and vitamins that condition your skin with the nutritious moisture it needs to appear youthfully energized. I use about one dropper, rubbing it gently on my face and neck.
This Laneige lip mask has gradually become one of my all time favourite products. I use it not only as a nighttime mask but also as a day time lip balm. It is formulated to deeply penetrate your lips and provide prolonged moisture. Since using it, I have noticed that my lips look super hydrated, no flakiness and also my lipstick applies better when I use it.
It kinda looks cute too when I apply it on its own :)
I love love sheet masks! It helps me to relax after a stressful day [which is like everyday these days, running a business and a full time job can take its toll]. I like to turn on some calming music or sounds or even listen to a podcast while doing my mask ritual and this helps me set the tone for a good night of rest. Sheet masks give you instant boost with the sheet gently pressing into the skin and penetrating the skin barrier to provide moisture and nutrients. Some are infused with special ingredients to meet specific skincare needs! I like to apply mine and leave it on for 20-30 mins.
Pro tip: apply the liquid essence on your hands and neck too and put leftover liquid in the fridge to use as a serum the following night.
STEP 9: Eye Cream
I don’t really use eye creams that often, unless I have dark circles or puffiness or if I feel the skin around my eyes look dull or dry. I like to use the Innisfree eye cream because of its hydrating formula and the steel applicator with its cooling effect helps to de-puff my eyes and I just like the feel of it on my skin. It also helps with cooling down my skin in this heat as the applicator can be used on the face too.
STEP 10: Moisturizer
This is maybe one of the most important steps in your skincare routine. On your journey to flawless skin, a key point to remember is dehydrated skin is a playground for skin problems. Nighttime moisturizers could be in cream, gel, lotion, sleeping mask form. I like to use the Cosrx sleeping masks or the Sulhwasoo Overnight mask. I am currently using the Cosrx rice sleeping mask which is enriched with more than 65% of rice extract, providing deep moisture to help the skin look clearer and softer. It is also good for cooling down sunburn or heated skin. Contains sunflower seed oil which helps decrease inflammation in the skin and enhances the development of new skin cells.
That's it for my night time routine. The products I use could change if I need to try out new products for the shop, but the steps remain the same.
So what do you think? Do you have a skincare routine? Any skin care tips to share? Do you use any of these products? Any yays or nays? But most importantly which step do you want to add to YOUR own routine?!
I'm curious, do share down in the comments por favour :)
